Terminal D Gate D5 Bus Station
A new two-story bus station at DFW Terminal D's Gate D5, linking tarmac-level ground transportation to the concourse above with a steel-framed upper level.

CHALLENGE
A two-story bus station at Terminal D's airside had to integrate a performance-specified prefabricated metal building, a drilled-pier foundation in gray shale with groundwater seepage, and a steel bridge connection into decades-old existing Terminal D framing, all on an active apron.

APPROACH
M designed cast-in-place straight-shaft drilled piers to gray shale about twenty-eight feet deep at 20,000 psf allowable bearing, grade beams on void cartons, and the moment connections transferring the bridge's lateral loads into existing wide-flange members, while specifying the metal building system to its supplier.

VALUE
The design cleanly separates supplier-designed superstructure from M's foundation and existing-structure connections; M served as structural subconsultant to HKS from design development through construction support.
