IAH Central Utility Plant

Comprehensive renovation and upgrade of the 1960s central utility plant serving the George Bush Intercontinental terminal complex — mission-critical chilled water, steam and electrical infrastructure kept in continuous operation through construction.

CHALLENGE

A sixty-year-old utility plant built to obsolete codes had to be assessed, renovated and expanded without a single shutdown — its systems serve every terminal at one of the nation's busiest airports.

APPROACH

M is Structural Engineer of Record: existing-conditions assessment of foundation walls, roof deck, cooling-tower basins confirmed by destructive core testing, and the utility tunnel — then renovation design with new steel framing, a utility pipe bridge, and tunnel structural repairs, delivered within a GMP design-build program led by Hensel Phelps with Page, now Stantec, as prime.

VALUE

The assessment became the technical basis of the GMP program, and every demolition sequence and temporary condition is engineered so the plant never stops serving the airport — the discipline mission-critical campuses demand.
