CHALLENGE
A 205,000-square-foot, two-story secondary school for 1,630 students had to be organized into four distinct small learning communities while carrying the long spans and lateral demands of large instructional and assembly volumes in Houston's high-wind, expansive-soil region.

APPROACH
The lateral system uses chevron-type steel concentrically braced frames supplemented by reinforced CMU shear walls, with steel moment frames substituted only where architectural openings preclude bracing.

VALUE
The result is an economical, code-disciplined steel-and-masonry structure that accommodates the four-community plan and the large clear volumes of a modern high school; M's scope carried the design through construction administration.
